Fortnite has recently seen a large increase in popularity, receiving some of the successes that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds received with its own similar take on the genre, added by the fact that both are free and are on consoles.
While many of the Fortnite Battle Royale tips and tricks also works for other Battle Royale games such as PUBG, there are enough noticeable differences for you to note and exploit which will help you to survive for as long as you can.
Essential Fortnite Battle Royale tips and tricks
While moving from one location to the next, try to avoid running out in the open if possible. Use the trees, buildings or cliffs as cover to help you avoid getting spotted. If you unknowingly get caught in someone’s cross-hairs, you won’t last for more than a few seconds.
Even if you reached the safe circle, that doesn’t mean that every other player is also there, as more could be coming in from the outside. Remember this so that you can avoid getting hit in the back, as well as use it to your advantage, especially if you can pick off advancing players from the safety of a nearby building.
If you do see a player coming, or hear gunshots fired nearby, you’ll have to decide whether or not you should approach, as you could easily be overpowered and outnumbered. On the flipside though, you might also approach the end of a firefight while all the other combatants are injured. The reward you get for defeating other players potentially could be valuable weapons and ammo, but it also could mean the end of your run if you’re not careful enough.
Headphones are essential for playing, letting you hear other players that might be advancing towards you. In Fortnite Battle Royale, movement creates much more noise compared to most other shooters, giving you plenty of opportunities to prepare yourself when it comes to dealing with oncoming adversaries.
Weapons and resources spawn inside of buildings and structures, and similar to PUBG, appears more frequently in populated areas. This doesn’t mean you should go there immediately however as it could attract other players to do the same thing. Again, you need to weigh up the reward of getting better loot along with the risk of coming up against more competition. It’s always possible to strike a balance, build up the confidence needed to explore villages as your arsenal constantly grows, or even ignore most buildings entirely if you want to.
A common practice in Battle Royale games is closing the door behind you whenever you enter a building. That way, it will look like no one entered yet, so you can catch other players coming in by surprise. Otherwise, you could leave the door open to indicate it as a warning sign to other players, or to pretend that the house has already been looted and left abandoned – such is the mind games involving opened and closed doors!
More Fortnite tips and tricks and PUBG differences you should know about
Now that we got the essentials out the way, it’s time to talk about the particulars of getting around, gearing up with weapons and avoiding storms. Though many of these are comparable to how PUBG does things, all of these tricks can still be pretty useful even if you’ve never played a Battle Royale game before.
Movement and using the map
You cannot go prone in Fortnite, meaning hiding in tall grass or slowly crawling your way to a building is impossible.
Not only does moving around cause much more noise than in PUBG – helpful when trying to figure out where people are coming from – but also sprinting will leave a dust trail behind players, making it easier for you to identify them from a distance. Remember this especially when you’re forced to move about in the open.
You can crouch to help hide your presence and move faster while crouching by hitting sprint as you would when walking normally.
Using the map and weathering the storm
Always use your map to help you plan the most effective route to the safe circle.
There are no vehicles present in Fortnite. However with the map being much smaller in size than usual, it’s much easier to reach the safe circle before the storm sets in. Even if the circle is located on the other side of the island, there would still be enough time to get there if you plan effectively.
Your sprint cannot outrun the storm, however like in PUBG you can stay in it for a generous amount of time while your health slowly drains, so don’t panic too much.
Although most of the times you need to avoid the storm no matter what, some see staying within the edge of the storm as a form of strategy, especially in the later stages making it so you can shoot from the outside in. Of course, this all depends on factors like your position, your gear, your health, etc…
With the map being smaller in size and all, it is much more densely populated here compared to most PUBG matches, meaning players encounter each other more frequently so try to keep this in mind while exploring the map.
Weapons and ammo
Weapons and ammo glow and float in the air, making it easier to see what you might need to get from a distance.
The same applies when players die too so you don’t have to check a body to know exactly what’s up for grabs.
You can also get weapons and resources from Treasure Chests inside of different buildings, which can almost always be heard long before you even see them as they produce a telltale shimmering noise. These often contain rare loot along with a handful of resources, so they are worth tracking down. Look everywhere there is and don’t be afraid to knock a wall or two down to reach them.
Fortnite Battle Royale building tips
One of the key differences between Fortnite and PUBG is the ability to construct walls, floors, roofs and traps using an in-game builder tool.
From this ability, you will be able to create bridges, shacks and towers to use as covers or as vantage points, which when used in the right location can give you quite an edge over the competition.
Since the contracting circle constantly shifts, it’s foolish to try and build anything substantial early on in the game. Instead, wait until the last few phases when it’s obvious where the final playing field is at then hunkered down and wait for players to come to you before you start building.
